While North America likes loud and overly-bright records, Cristobal Dion acknowledges the Japanese as being a more sophisticated culture and therefore felt this market required a more nuanced, less distorted master.

LoFi is a misleading name for the instrumental hip hop genre. Short for “low fidelity”, it can be (understandably) interpreted as low quality. However, in a world where a sterile digital sound is now the norm, it is not surprising to see the emergence of a culture where analog noises are added to the music for purely aesthetic reasons. In our digital age, the hiss and scratch noises are not there by mistake; a 32-bit floating point Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) does not make such noise. These were added on purpose in order to design the texture and atmosphere to the art form.
LoFiとは、「インストゥルメンタルヒップホップ」ジャンルと勘違いされやすい呼称である。LoFiは、「ローフィデリティ」の略称であり、当然ながら低品質と解釈されることもあるが、歪みのないデジタルサウンドが主流となった現代、純粋に美的な理由からアナログノイズを加える文化が出現してもおかしくはないだろう。デジタル時代のヒスノイズやスクラッチノイズに関して言えば、間違っても32bit浮動小数点数のDAW（デジタル・オーディオ・ワークステーション）がそのようなノイズを出すことはない。これらは、芸術の質感や雰囲気をデザインするために、意図的に加えられたものなのだ。
Being a former Mastering Engineer himself, Cristobal Dion firmly believes that you should be able to hear the record as the artist intended. It might sound counter-intuitive, but this entire “Lo-Fi” album was actually recorded, arranged, mixed and mastered at high resolution using high fidelity listening equipment. The only step of the process that included a compromise is the formatting to CD specifications: from 24 bit down to 16 bit – and from 96 kHz down to 44.1 kHz.

It is also interesting to note that Japan has played a major role in the creation of the LoFi Hip Hop genre, partially thanks to renown artists such as Nujabes and DJ Krush, but first and foremost for the invention of some of the most game-changing samplers in the world: the AKAI MPC product line and the very successful Roland SP-404 series.

Laurent Fintoni, Author of the book "Bedroom Beats & B-Sides", defines a beat-tape as: "a collection of sometimes unfinished instrumental productions designed to showcase a producer’s skills, which have today become an accepted release format as popular as their close relative, the mixtape. "

In the recent years, the format has evolved to become a more finished products, including a better sound mixing and mastering, better transitions and sound effects. Good examples of this type of work include J Dilla’s Donuts as well as Madlib's "Sound Ancestors".

What’s different with this Japanese version?
今回の日本版はどのような点が違うのか？
A lot. First, the album is burned on a gold Archival-Grade disc, which increases the extended lifetime of the disc. Second, exhaustive Quality Control is conducted on every single disc to ensure that the burning process was as precise and error-free as possible.
結論からいうとかなり違う。まず、このアルバムはゴールドアーカイバルグレードのディスクに焼かれており、ディスクの寿命が長くなっている。そして、ディスク1枚1枚に徹底した品質管理を行い、可能な限り正確で間違いのない焼き付けを実現しているのが特徴だ。
Finally, the track listing has been changed significantly to include some of the best Japanese-inspired beats that were previously released by Cristobal Dion. These beats include Dead man’s Jazz, Nikita 2077 and Blue Note Tokyo which are obvious homage to the Japanese culture.
最後に、トラックリストが大幅に変更され、クリストバル・ディオンが過去にリリースした最高の日本風ビートを収録している。これらのビートからは、Dead man's Jazz、Nikita 2077、Blue Note Tokyoなど、日本文化へのオマージュを存分に感じられるだろう。
